My granny’s grave is in Vienna’s Hietzing Cemetery. Only metres away is a simple, understated grave. That of Gustav Klimt, my favourite painter. It is a tragedy that his unique style disappeared with his death, so I decided to paint “Gustav” the bird in homage to the way Klimt interwove abstract symbols to create a beautiful reality. (In this case, portrayed on the bird’s beak.)
